In un ettaro di terreno riesci a trovare le uova???
O fai tutto al naturale e non usi l'incubatrice?
It is not so simple, but also, it is not so complicate.
No, I cannot make natural incubation in total, in that case I could loose big quantity of offsprings unnecessary. So, I am collecting eggs from ground and making artificial incubation every year. Yes, of course, some eggs still left out, but their number cannot superate 15% in total. And, depend on weather outside, I am having some naturaly birth of Tortoises yearly. But, I am preffering to collect as more eggs as possible, and to make fully artificial incubation.
You know very well, temperate Tortoises are preffering to find good place for eggs lay, asking for three important condition, as follows:
- good insolation during incubation time, to have adequate temperature inside of terrain where eggs placed;
- the position where eggs would be protected by high humidity, or water coverage (it means, some upper position with good drainage); and
- finaly, good ground supstrat for eggs lay!
Having knoledge about it (but not for one day or one month, many years passed before I knew enough about it), I am preparing each year good place for Tortoises lay inside of enclosed terrain for my animals. It means, due I am having terrain with elevation of 7 degrees approximately, I am using upper position in southern side of this terrain for Tortoises lay. This place is safe of high humidity (very good drainage), have perfect insolation (independing it is not so important, because I am collecting laid eggs periodicaly!), and structure of ground is very good for Tortoises lay. I am using mixed sand, fine-grained pebbles and wood humus to prepare good supstrat for Tortoises lay. Yes, sand and pebbler are warm in upper layer on hot summer days, and Tortoises are happy to stay on terrain like this. But, after few cm inside both of them are cold as supstrat, and good quality humus is necessary to make perfect structure and enough warm for eggs lay.
Tortoises are very inteligent animals (no interest who is thinking in opposite), and they are walking every day looking for food, good terrain for taking sunbath, and good terrain for rest. So, terrain which provide highly insolated place, good quantity of natural food and enough shadow is perfect to them, and they know about it very well.
After gave them out from winter-rooms (at end of March, or middle of April depending on outside weather, and the wake-up activities), they are having enough time to find good place for eggs lay inside of enclosured terrain of mine. And, they do it every year with no troubles!
Yours truly, Marco
P.S. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR FEDERICA, ALESSANDRO AND SOME OTHER FRIENDS, TRYING TO MAKE TRANSLACTION OF BAD ENGLISH OF MINE IN GOOD ITALIAN LANGUAGE. EXUSE ME, TOO, PLEASE, WHILE I AM TRYING TO WRITE TO YOU IN YOUR OWN LANGUAGE, WITH SHORT AVAILABILITY OF ITALIAN WORDS OF MINE. I HOPE, YOU ARE ABLE TO ACCEPT IT!
